Under Grand Prince Yaroslav, Kievan Rus reaches the height of its power, militarily and culturally.
There's a remote connection between Volga Bulgaria and modern Bulgaria. Turkic Bulgar tribes created Great Bulgaria, a confederation of tribes, in territory northeast of the Black Sea. Later, this confederation declined, leading to Bulgar migration to other lands. One migration went north, settling to the east of the Rus and founding Volga Bulgaria as a multi-ethnic land that later converted to Islam. Another migration went west and became the First Bulgarian Empire and later converted to Christianity. The Bulgars mixed with Vlachs and Slavs, becoming the Slavic-speaking Bulgarians that make up most of today's Bulgaria.
