Legend claims that one reason the Kievan Rus converted to Orthodox Christianity was due to the inspiring cathedral of Hagia Sofia ("Holy Wisdom") in Konstantinoupolis. The Rus would build several cathedrals inspired by Hagia Sofia, but with the name personified as Saint Sofyi ("Sofia"). Yaroslav the Wise oversaw the completion of Saint Sofyi Cathedral in Kiev before his death in 1054. The illustration above is from 1651, while the upper part of the cathedral was being rebuilt in "Ukrainian Baroque" style, after centuries of disrepair.
