The battles of Vozhe River (1378) and Kulikovo along the Don River (1380) were the first two times Russian forces inflicted major defeats on the Golden Horde. Prince Dmitriy of Moskva became near-legendary in Russian history as Dmitriy Donskoy (Dmitriy of the Don). In the short term, the Golden Horde recovered, burnt Moskva in revenge in 1382, and reasserted its authority as tributary master over most Russian lands for another century. In the long term, however, the horde went into decline and eventually broke up into separate states that were subsequently conquered, often by Moskva or its successor state, Russia.
