Extra Errata

Scorched Earth Rule 27F4, Soviet Guards.

OLD RULE:
The Soviet player may deactivate Guards air units, the same as other air units may be deactivated. For each Guards air unit deactivated, the Soviet player may activate one air unit in the available box as a Guards air unit. For example, the Soviet player deactivates a Guards LaGG-3 and activates an La-5FN in the available box as a Guards air unit. Note that this allows the Soviet player to upgrade his active Guards air units as improved models become available.

NEW RULE:
The Soviet player may deactivate Guards air units, the same as other air units may be deactivated (Rule 27D) with the following additions: When a Guards air unit is deactivated, it is placed in the remnants box as a Soviet regular air unit. For each Guards air unit deactivated, the Soviet player may activate one air unit in the available box as a Guards air unit. Note that this allows the Soviet player to upgrade his active Guards air units as improved models become available. Example: The Soviet player deactivates a Guards LaGG-3, removing the Guards LaGG-3 from play and placing a Soviet regular LaGG-3 in the remnants box. The Soviet player then activates an La-5FN in the available box as a Guards air unit.

Note: The following change corrects a situation in which the Soviet player can occasionally gain extra Guards air units. In the old rule, the Soviet player gets one Guards air unit for each Guards air unit deactivated. However, when the air units in the remnants box are grouped per the replacement rules, there was a chance that the Guards air unit there would be returned to play, thus giving the Soviet player an extra Guards air unit. The rules change prevents this.

Soviet Artillery Divisional Assemblies.

Q: By June 43, there are 20x 9-6 Art XX and 3x 14-6 Art XX available for assmebly. To assemble these the Soviets need 26x 3-6 Art X, 26x 3-2-6 Art X, 23x 2-6 Art X, and 23x 2-1-8 Mortar X. However, by June 1943, the Soviets have not received enough 2-1-8 Mortar X (or 2-8 Mortar X, as these may be used in place of the 2-1-8 Mortar X), which means that they can't assemble all of the artillery divisions. Is this a oversight in the rules?

A: No. More mortar brigades arrive later, allowing the divisions to be assembled. Perhaps it would have been more convenient to only add artillery division assemblies when there were enough assets to actually assemble them, but that's not what I decided back when I designed Scorched Earth. If it's any consolation, it's a vastly simplified version of the historical situation, in which some divisions were officially formed at some date but really weren't effective until later (sometimes much later). Some were officially formed but remained in the rear either forming up or as training organizations before they were disbanded (and then new division formed using the same divisional identifications over a year later).
